Oz: Lion

Description

First off, I have to give credit to the Sci-Fi Channel's "Tin Man" mini-series, Enrique Fernandez's art for "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" graphic novel, and *Tyshea's "+OZ+" [link] for the inspiration.

For my portfolio class, I'm creating a series of character designs with this set including certain ones from "The Wizard of Oz" story. For the Lion, I wanted a strong African design and was influenced by the Maasai tribe, except with a purple color scheme rather than red. I also liked the concept of him having a mask, which he figuratively and literally hides behind to be brave. Eventually, though, he comes to learn that he possessed the courage all along. Feel free to read the notes if you like, but for this character I didn't incorporate as much as I had planned. Sometimes I find myself overcomplicating things. But it's part of my process, to jot down all the potential ideas I have and figure out what to use.

Anyway, I hope you guys like it. Plan on eventually seeing a fully illustrated and colored version of him.

Every few years I circle back to these designs because I absolutely love them. I have my own photoshop take on some of these characters as well and I have long wanted to see a cinematic remake more in line with the original books... I think your design thoughts and execution are brilliant and I admittedly about to look thru your page to see what you have come up with since the last time I went over it all.
